    About Casey

Casey Koontz is the visionary behind DOMO DOJO, bringing a wealth of experience and a passion for innovative design to every project. His extensive background in both architecture and construction, combined with his commitment to sustainability and excellence, shapes the firm’s approach to creating beautiful and functional spaces.

    Education and Experience

After high school, Casey joined the Air Force, serving as a satellite wideband telecommunications technician and participating in Operation Iraqi Freedom. This experience instilled in him strategic and analytical thinking, which has been instrumental in shaping his approach to architecture and design.

Following his military service, Casey worked as a construction contractor from 2005 to 2013. As a Journeyman carpenter specializing in rough and finish carpentry, he framed new houses and worked on additions and remodels. His expertise extends to decks, fences, and roofing, with two years dedicated exclusively to roofing, primarily asphalt shingles and various types of metal roofing. His experience in commercial, civic, and residential construction adds a practical, hands-on dimension to his architectural practice.

Casey then pursued higher education, earning dual bachelor's degrees: a BS in Environmental Studies and a BArch in Architecture from the University of Oregon. He studied sustainable eco-districts and self-sufficient communities in Europe, including Amsterdam, Freiburg, Malmo, and Copenhagen. During this time, he also worked as a consultant for the tiny house builder Oregon Cottage Company and as a draftsman for LA Kersh Architecture, both based in Eugene, Oregon.

After completing his degrees, Casey became a project manager at Studio e Architecture in Eugene, Oregon, further broadening his expertise in residential, commercial, and civic design projects. His professional journey includes collaborations with architects on various projects, giving him a well-rounded perspective on architectural practices.

In addition to his architectural roles, Casey was one of the founders of Proper Built, a design-build company based out of Springfield, Oregon. As a general contractor, Proper Built specializes in residential and commercial construction from the ground up. Recently, Casey left Proper Built to begin DOMO DOJO, where he continues to apply his extensive experience and passion for innovative design.

    Design Philosophy

Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright’s iconic Falling Water, Casey believes in the harmony between structure and nature, aiming to create designs that are both innovative and integrated with their surroundings. He is dedicated to creating simple, economical, and beautiful structures that are well-constructed and sustainable.

His expertise lies in both design and construction project management, allowing him to oversee projects from concept to completion. His deep involvement in design and building science makes him a reliable source of knowledge within the team.

    Professional Focus

At DOMO DOJO, Casey focuses on high-value tasks such as client consultations, construction consulting, drone work, and virtual tours. He aims to work as efficiently as possible, delegating tasks to his skilled team members while ensuring the highest standards of quality and innovation in every project.

    Interests and Hobbies

Outside of work, Casey enjoys trail running, playing pool, spending time with his children—both human and dog—and learning more about himself and the great state of Oregon.
